Please join us to celebrate a new achievement of CI!

Chadwick International was recently authorized as an IB World School for the Primary Years Program.

CI was recognized for its potential with thorough action plans that defined the majority of our work for the next few years. CI plans to continue to focus on more clear articulation of its assessment practices to include portfolios for all students and implementation of assessment policy along with strengthening written curriculum and development of more student-led action in class.

CI received 15 commendations as a symbol of superiority beyond the expectations of the IB. Some of those included the integration of CI’s technology program, use of facilities and scheduling for optimal student learning, focus on professional development and many others.

This authorization is a perfect representation of each day in the Chadwick International Village and is a celebration of the hard work by students, teachers and parents.

Here’s to CI!

Village School participated in a Readathon

From April 29th-May 3rd, the Village School participated in a Readathon. Students took up the challenge to ask sponsors to pay them for each minute or page that they read during the week.

Before the Readathon began, Grade 4A (Ms. Tonya Low’s class) and Ms. Jager (Village Librarian) introduced the Readathon to students through a video and posters.

The purpose of the Readathon was to encourage students to read but also to raise money for an organization called Room to Read. This NGO was started by John Wood in 1999. While on a trek in Nepal, he discovered a school that had a library with no books. He sent them enough donated books to fill their library and then quit his job as an executive at Microsoft because he wanted to provide all children with books. Today this organization has funded over 10,000 libraries in Asia and Africa as well as scholarships for girls and publication of books.

Our students, with great support from their parents and other sponsors, raised just over 11,000,000W in the Readathon. This money will be used to provide a library in Nepal and one in Vietnam. Teams will begin putting the libraries together this fall and they will be ready for students when the school year begins in September of 2014.

An author and photographer Nic Bishop visited CI

Chadwick International was thrilled to host author and photographer, Nic Bishop, on Wednesday, March 13th. Nic Bishop has written and been the photographer for numerous non-fiction books for children. His specialty is getting detailed up-close photos of animals. As he says on his website, “What I love to see is fine textural details, like the micro hairs on a spider’s legs or the faint sheen on a frog’s skin, which only show up with really good light.” He travels the world spending hours out in the field waiting for the exact moment to capture his subjects. Mr. Bishop's presentation was filled with funny antidotes of waiting for a snake to swallow an egg, a tarantula to shed its skin or of little jungle creatures coming out at night and playing with his camera equipment. Sometimes it would take him months to capture just one moment on film. Because of his incredible patience he creates books with stunningly vivid photography and interesting observations. Mr. Bishop kept the students all mesmerized with his storytelling and we had a long line of students eager to ask Mr. Bishop questions about his life.

Sung Joon Kim, a well-known national news anchor from SBS visited CI

Sung Joon Kim, one of the well-known national news anchors from SBS paid a visit to Chadwick International to educate our 5th graders about media’s past and present. He shared his knowledge and experiences as an anchor for more than two decades in the Korean media, providing students with in-depth insight and perspective as part of CI’s current Unit of Inquiry on media. Throughout his presentation, he shared his daily routine, such as how the decisions are being made in the news room, as well as how the media has changed over the years. Mr. Kim also discussed about some media bias and accuracy, encouraging the students to look at more than one source for information that they seek. One of the impressive insights was that although he has reporters working for him, he still conducts his own research every day for information and news.

Throughout the unit, one of the main goals was to push the students to become more alert and literate about the media and to be cautious of what they read and see every day on the internet. Towards the end of the presentation, Mr. Kim was inundated with well thought questions from our enthusiastic and excited students.

- Chadwick International team won the Grand Prize
- CI team qualified for the VEX World Championship scheduled to be held on April 17th at Disneyland, U.S.

Co-hosted by Chosun Education and JH Science Academy to discover students talented in science through robot education, 2012-2013 VEX Robotics Championship (VEX) Korea Tournament was held on 9th at the auditorium of Hansung Science High School.
Began in 2007, VEX has been solidified as the largest robot competition for teenagers in the world and had 7,100 teams from 23 countries participating last year. 18 middle and high school teams took part in the first Korea Tournament, including 'MinJokers' from Korean Minjok Leadership Academy, ‘6724 #1•2’ from Chadwick International, and 'Hansung' from Hansung Science High School. Teams went through preliminary round, main round, and final round, competing with each other for five hours for the ticket to World Championship to be held in Disneyland Anaheim Convention Center (Anaheim, California) on April 17th.

Photo 2: Participants of 2012-2013 VEX Robotics Korea Championship

The theme of this year's competition is ‘Sack Attack’. Each team has sacks at their side and the team that puts its sack in the goalpost placed at the center of the square-shaped field wins the game. All teams played three games at the preliminary round held in the morning and four teams that have won the most and gained the most points advanced to the main round. At the main round held in the afternoon the 4 advanced teams chose one of the lost teams as collaboration team, advancing 2 teams. These teams chose its partner team among those who did not advance to the next round. Members of both teams played as the same team, and these united teams went though the main round to be the winner.

The winner of the honorable Grand Prize and a ticket to the World Championship was team ‘6724 #1’. Composed of three 9th grade students from Chadwick International (Jinseong Kim, Seung Jin Yang, and Cole Hickenbottom), this team has distinguished itself from the first game in the preliminary round. ‘Iron Ore’(Jihyuk Ko, Minki Kwak, Honggyu Shin, and Soohyun Cho), a team of 7th grade students from Daedeok Middle School in Daejeon, earned Gold Award. Yoonsik Kim from Chungbuk Mechatronics High School (10th grade) and Cheongju Seowon Middle School students Seongwoo Hwang (9th grade), Woochul Lee, and Injun Lee (8th grade) formed a team 'Black Bear' and earned Silver Award. Team 'MinJokers,' seniors from Korean Minjok Leadership Academy (Seongwoo Bae, Seungin Ryu, Seongjae Hwang, Inchan Hwang), has won Bronze Award. Chadwick International's another 9th graders’ team ‘6724 #2’ (Kyungryul Park, Suwon Chai, Seunghui Hur) that entered as a collaborating team and ‘Robot of Legend 2’ (Senior Joonho Kim and Taeho Kim, Junior Jinho Kim and Sunghun Chang) from Chungnam Mechanical Technical High School has respectively received Best Teamwork Award and Good Teamwork Award. Moreover, team ‘Robot of Legend 2’ and 'Robot Style' (alliance of 10th graders from Gaepo High School, Youngdong High School, and Whimoon High School students) won Design Award regardless of their ranking in the tournament. Director of JH Science Academy Jongchun Woo said, "Although it was the first tournament held in Korea, I saw some outstanding ideas in building robots and enjoyed observing well-played games throughout the event." He added, "It was somewhat unfortunate for a few teams being disadvantaged due to the lack of understanding on VEX global rule. The event, however, presented awesome works from relatively young students, showing the chance for domestic tournaments to be more active and the possibility for good records in the world championship."

Chadwick International is thrilled to announced that the school has received official acceptance into Korean-American Interscholastic Activities Conference (KAIAC), which is the pre-eminent athletic and activities league for international schools in Korea.

For Chadwick International to be considered, the school needed to meet the league's criteria which could not have been done without the support of the Chadwick community including faculty, administration, students and parents. This is an important milestone for CI, and we are very excited to be affiliated with this group of schools.
