Where We Are in Place and Time provided our Grade 5 students with an authentic experience of migration. Through this provocation, students experienced what it’s like to be displaced from familiar surroundings by having to leave their usual classrooms due to maintenance unexpectedly repairing a so-called “pipe leak.” To complete their assigned activity, students needed to scout out another classroom they could work in. Logistically, no classroom could accept more than five students to their room. Therefore, while some students found classroom ‘homes’ that welcomed them with open arms, other students were met with ‘homes’ that did not provide them with resources or turned them away altogether.
After the provocation, students reflected on their experience by sharing their thoughts and self-reflecting by mapping out their emotional journey. Through this experience, students had the opportunity to develop empathy for displaced persons and gained a general understanding of migration.
