Friday, Sept. 18, 2020 MS Principal Ms. Jacqui Cameron Dear Chadwick International Middle School Families,
Middle School Principal MS Assistant Principal
Mr. Charlton Jackson Class Representatives
Samin Ahn Sihyun Baek Danny OK Edward Cha Bonyeop Koo Patricia Jung Sue Park Junwoo Lee Jacqueline Park Junsang Ryu Dana Shim Kayla Shin
One of the goals of the Student Council will be to allow the students to have some autonomy in the Middle School as well as establish camaraderie among their peers. My role will be to help ensure that they can be successful in achieving their goals. In doing this, the Student Council can be an ideal vehicle to model self-determination theory.
Self-Determination Theory
Key elements of self-determination theory (a concept on which the Chadwick program is based) include autonomy, relationships, and competence. When students (or anyone for that matter) perceive:
intrinsic motivation is fostered. At Chadwick we want students to follow the Core Values, to achieve academic excellence, and to lead by example because they are intrinsically motivated to do so and not because they are told to do so. These principles of self-determination theory work in parenting as well, and the Middle School is the time for parents to transition from managing their child's life to consulting with their children to help them manage their own life. It begins with small things like allowing Middle Schoolers to choose their own electives or encouraging them to advocate for themselves when they interact with peers and teachers. MYP Coordinator Ms. Rachel Dickinson Back to School Night - Thursday September 24, 5 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. Next week, the Middle School will host a virtual Back to School Night. Teachers have been hard at work creating informational videos regarding their courses, and they are looking forward to meeting with you via Zoom. The evening will have both live and pre-recorded sections.
Part 1: 5 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Part 2: 5:30 p.m. - 5:50 p.m.
Part 3: 6 p.m. - 7:15 p.m.
Your questions should be about the course and expectations for all students. Please avoid asking questions or giving information that relates only to your child. If you do need to speak to a teacher about your child, you are encouraged to email them or request an online meeting.
All of the information about the evening can be found on this website, including the schedule and links for all of the Flipgrids, Zoom meetings, and other documents. CIPA Middle School Ms. Heeyoung Ahn Ms. Olivia Tjahjono Dear Middle School Families,
We, Heeyoung Ahn (G7 Dohun Kim's Mom) and Olivia Tjahjono (G7 Ben Indra's Mom), humbly introduce ourselves as this year's Middle School Representatives. We have assumed the role starting after the CIPA General Assembly last week with the approval of MS parents from our predecessors, Ms. Hannah Moon and Ms. Chenoa Pysar, who had kindly continued to care for our Middle School affairs until then.
We are also very pleased to announce that we have our complete team of Grade Parents formed.
G8 Grade Parents: Nayoung Kim - Sean Kim's Mom (Lead), Soojin Hong - Brendon Lee's Mom, Hye Joon Park - Danny Ok's Mom
G7 Grade Parents: Jihee Ryu - Yeonho Shin's Mom (Lead), Hyesun Lee - Sebastian Lim's Mom, Aeyoung Lee - Edward Kim's Mom
G6 Grade Parents: Kacey Doe - Alessia Park's Mom (Lead), Alison Lihalakha - Liam Lihalakha's Mom
Together we will hold monthly meetings with the Middle School Principal to discuss upcoming events for the coming months and communicate any issues that relate to MS.
As announced in MS Middle Matters last week, Ms. Emily Choi and Ms. Jackie Eom, who have managed our Middle School office in dedication for the past few years, will be working until September 11. On behalf of the MS parents, we delivered a handwritten thank you card to them. Ms. Chelsea Lee and Ms. Hyewon Jang are now new members of the Middle School office family.
The MS office contact is the same as before: 032-250-5002 songdo-middleoffice@chadwickschool.org
In addition, all communication from school comes from emails and MS Middle Matters, which is published in email format every Friday. Therefore, parents who have not received emails from school should confirm if their email account is correct on the school website. If there is any problem or issue, please inform the school so that you can receive information on time without missing anything.
We are excited to be working together as your representatives and are looking forward to helping establish a smooth communication between parents and the school this year. Middle School Service Leadership Team Introduction of GSL Global Social Leaders (GSL) is an organization based in the United Kingdom. Global Social Leaders was created in 2011 by Future Foundations and Wellington Leadership Institute. Both organizations have extensive experience, credentials, and awards for their work with young people, leadership, and character building. Future Foundations (FF) mission is to inspire young people to achieve their full potential. FF's vision is a society where all organizations are led by socially conscious people, with every young person making the transition into adulthood with the foundations they need for their future. GSL seeks to achieve positive change, and it encourages youth to take action and achieve that positive change. "Think Globally, Act Socially, Start Now."(video) Greener is Cleaner (GIC) GSL Experience & Now Some initiatives I take are climate strikes and protests, campaigns and speeches, and law, business, and city planning proposals. Since participating in the GSL Global Goals Competition, GIC has enhanced life-long valuable skills such as cooperation, organization, patience, and dedication. By working towards a shared purpose, we strengthened our sense of responsibility, the pursuit of passion, authenticity, talents, and enjoyment of the journey.
Jihyeon Cherry Sung (Grade 8). Philippines Service Learning (PSL) GSL Experience Philippines Service Learning (PSL) is a club in both Middle and Upper School that strives to raise awareness about the plights and hardships faced by the Filipino students, specifically in Labo, Camarines Norte. In order to fulfill one of the major goals of our club, PSL has participated in the Global Social Leaders (GSL) Competition during 2019 and was awarded with the social media champion award. In the beginning, when we joined the competition, we were not in a very advantageous position as the due dates were arriving fast and we were not entirely sure of what we had to do to start. However, with the help of our supervisor, Ms. Luzarraga, we were able to send our proposal on time. From then on, we started getting used to the timeline and were able to successfully move on.
Seoin Yang & Dong Yun David Jung (Grade 10) MS Athletics Director Mr. Bobby Reed As we return to our hybrid learning and we welcome students back on campus, our Middle School Athletics Program will do the same. Here are a few things to remember:
1) Each team has their own Google Classroom for direct information sent to the students. If you are not added as a guardian, please do so. This way you are aware of their athletic learning and can ask any questions you need to of the coaches. 2) Practices are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with some designated Saturdays. Each team will know their own schedule. The schedule has been posted to our MS Athletics Band. Please make sure you have joined. 3) As of today, there will be no jamborees with other schools. Everything we do will be Chadwick athletes only. 4) Please make sure all student athletes have the appropriate equipment needed to participate. Soccer: turf cleats, shin guards, blue or white socks, water bottle, sweat towel and sport goggles for those who wear glasses. XC: proper running shoes, water bottle and sweat towel. Badminton: proper athletic shoes, badminton racquet, water bottle, sweat towel and sport goggles for those who wear glasses. Masks are MANDATORY for everyone to participate. Specific instructions will be posted to each team's Google Classroom in regards to equipment and masks. 5) Every Student in the MS will, at some point, participate on a MS athletics team. Please review the provided loom video giving instructions on where to find and how to complete the MS Athletics Waivers.
This is MANDATORY for all students to do. The most important thing is to complete the student information with your child's name in English (Example, Claire Heeryoung Kim). This year we have multiple students with the same name. This helps me identify the students and is easier for me to track.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me anytime (breed@chadwickschool.org).
