Friday, Oct. 23, 2020 MS Principal Ms. Jacqui Cameron Dear Chadwick International Middle School Families,
Jacqui Cameron Middle School Principal Upcoming Dates & Things to note A clarification on next week's Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences! Our upcoming Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences next Thursday and Friday are primarily meant as an opportunity for you and your child to connect with all of their individual teachers.
MS Monday PowerBoosts Our Middle School Monday PowerBoosts aim to lessen the need for hagwons (external tutoring) by providing additional quality academic support on campus while also giving MS students an opportunity to engage with Chadwick alumni. During PowerBoosts, they are free to ask for:
We hope that this program will grow as more students sign up, and then we will operate "boosts" for specific subject areas. The PowerBoosts are ultimately meant to be an opportunity for students and alumni to build community and for current students to leverage the support of the wider Chadwick community for their academic and personal needs. Through this partnership, alumni will be able to give Chadwick-specific advice that will prove far more meaningful than what any hagwon can give.
An Additional MS After-school Session! On Fridays after school from 4 p.m. - 5:10 p.m., Taesun (who also leads PowerBoosts on Mondays) will lead his flagship "Study Strategies" program for Middle School students. The "Study Strategies" program is built on years of educational research into what makes successful students, but is unlike any other "wellness" or "study skills" course. It is meant to teach foundational study strategies in an engaging, interactive, and fun way to provide students a new, fresh take at study skills. Ultimately, the program serves a dual purpose: to teach students effective study strategies while providing students a time to relax and take a break from school. In a highly competitive country such as Korea, going to hagwons (academies) no longer provides a competitive edge, but having a concrete foundation for "how to study" will.
Eating lunch while at school! We would like to extend a warm welcome to Ms. Maria Escano Picornell, one of our Middle School Spanish teachers. She has finally arrived in Korea and will be here on campus with us in a few weeks as soon as she finishes her quarantine.

Middle School Schedule: With the changes in guidelines related to physical distancing, we have designed a schedule for the Middle School that will allow us to continue with our hybrid approach and allow our grade levels to "catch up" with one another in their amount of days on campus.
The week of November 2, we will continue with our 2-day hybrid rotation. Grades 7 and 8 will have several additional days on campus to allow those two grade levels to "catch up" with Grade 6 in the number of on-campus days. Grade 7 will have an additional day on Monday, November 2 and Friday, November 6; Grade 8 will have additional days on Thursday, November 5 and Friday, November 6. On Friday, November 6, we hope to bring back all three grade levels in the Middle School.
With this plan, all three grade levels will have almost the same number of days on campus. Please keep in mind that this is how we have planned the schedule for now; however, it is possible that the schedule may need to change based on the pandemic. Thank you for your understanding on this matter. MYP Coordinator Ms. Rachel Dickinson This week we invited parents to join us for a presentation about the Middle Years Programme Curriculum with a particular focus on Language Pathways. Thank you for attending and for your feedback and follow up questions. You can view the presentation here and the recording here.
Next week, we will send a non-binding survey for course selections for next year. Families will not have to adhere to the choices made on this survey. It is merely for the school to plan for staffing and scheduling for 2021-2022. Final course selections will be made by families in January-February of 2021. Reminders:
Weekly Computer Updates Mr. Alex McMillan and the EdTech Team COVID-19 has made technology increasingly important in how we teach and learn. Because of this, we would like to ask that students begin to form a new habit of checking to see if their devices are up to date each Sunday before they attend school on Monday. We have noticed that there are three pieces of software that the students often have issues with: Mac updates, Google Chrome updates, and Zoom updates. If students are able to update all of their software ahead of time, it should help to ensure that all students have a more seamless experience in their classes with their teachers. As a result, students can focus their time on learning. Similarly, we are asking all teachers to prepare for their week with a similar routine as well.
Updating Chrome Updating Zoom Updating Macs MS Science Mr. Damon Holmes Students have had their hands full, quite literally, in Middle School science so far this year. Grade 6 has had a wonderful start to their first trimester. A few weeks ago, students successfully completed their first lab on density using materials they had at home. This week, students finished demonstrating connections between the Earth's interior and engineering practices through their creation of a newsletter called, The Geothermal Endeavor. In the coming weeks, we will be moving onto rocks and minerals before cinching up the unit with a lab on weathering and erosion.
MS Drama Mr. Wenny Masinde Over the last few weeks, I have received a number of enquiries from students regarding the MS Play. We are in the middle of a pandemic and there has been a shift in the way we do things. However, I believe that the pandemic also presents us with an opportunity, as artists, to create, perform and share experiences with the rest of our community.
The answer is yes!
During this pandemic, there have been different stories all over the media. Stories of people who have lost their jobs and been thrown out of their homes, others who have not been able to say farewell to their dying loved ones, stories of fashion houses that have turned their trade to making masks, others about hotels and restaurants that have offered meals to health workers and many more
The student's job will be to research for a compelling story based on the events surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. We shall then help them shape it into a monologue, duologue, mime, tableau, animation or any other theatrical form that they will be comfortable using to share their story.
We shall begin to do this in trimester 2 on every Wednesday and Friday from 4.00pm - 5.15 pm. (Please note that there will be a schedule created for this so that a student does not attend all sessions) Those who get a story that is compelling may share it with me any time before this. We hope to share these stories with the rest of the school some time in spring. Tentatively the week of April 19.
MS Principal Ms. Jacqui Cameron
Middle School Principal Upcoming Dates & Things to note
Annual Fund 2020-2021 Annual Fund Campaign 2020-2021
Weekly Computer Updates Mr. Alex McMillan and the EdTech Team COVID-19로 인해 우리가 가르치고 배우는 방식에서 기술이 점점 더 중요해 졌습니다.
