Friday, November 20 2020 Village School Newsletter Dear Chadwick Village School Families,
We continue to encourage our students to use their keen minds to be curious. Recently, I enjoyed joining a Grade 2 classroom to listen to some questions that students had asked. Some of these included:
These are all excellent questions, and we will explore ways to find the answers to these questions!
Many thanks to Ms. Mei-Lyn Freeman and Ms. Pam Castillo for leading nightly parent workshops this week within the different grade levels. We really appreciate the 100+ parents who joined up for these workshops. Recordings of the workshops and slides can be found on the Village School Curriculum Website. More workshops will be scheduled at the start of each Unit of Inquiry.
Our curriculum coordinators really enjoyed the interaction with parents and the great questions that were asked. These included:
Please tune in to the recordings to find out the answers to these questions.
Engaging students in solving creative problems helps them to use numbers flexibly and to communicate their thinking. Find out more in Learn Math Without Fear, including the science behind it.
There have been reports that some drivers are not following the protocols that we have in place for car safety. For example, cars cannot drop students off at Gate 2 nor can cars be parked out on the street by Gate 2. Cars can use public car parking lots as shown on the map provided HERE. We have added an additional security guard in the morning (drop-off time) and two more security guards in the afternoon (pick-up time) to support the safe flow of traffic near Gate 2 and outside the campus. We expect all drivers to take great care when approaching the school gate and when driving on campus. Please follow the directions of our security guards.
During our weekly Pre-K to Grade 5 assembly, students were reminded about the importance of wearing a helmet if they are riding a bike, scooter or any equipment involving wheels. Korean law states that Village School-aged students must wear a helmet when riding a bike. Helmets could help save your child's life if there is an accident. Please ensure that your child wears a helmet!
COVID-19 Protocol If students have any symptoms that are classified as COVID-19 suspicious symptoms, according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education/Incheon Office of Education, the school health office follows the protocol below. In the health office, we have advised students to consult a doctor at a clinic or the screening center regarding their symptoms; however, the health office does not determine whether a student requires the COVID-19 test or not. At the very beginning of the pandemic, we had several cases when we advised parents to visit a screening center as directed by the IOE/MOE guideline. Now that the KDCA is allowing doctor's discretion on whether the person with symptoms needs to be referred to the screening center, we have implemented that approach for our school guidelines.
The parent's confirmation letter needs to be sent to the health office via an email or paper upon the student's return day.
Is Our School Nut-free? Currently at CI, our cafeteria is serving nut-free meals, and we also designate the classroom as a nut-free zone when necessary. However, the school as a whole is not a nut-free zone. Even with regular reminders from the school, it is possible and likely that cross-contamination will occur and that students without allergies will unknowingly bring items that contain nuts.
We do recognize that some students and their parents may be anxious about their child's health and well-being due to the nut allergy. While we understand those concerns, we do not believe that there is sufficient evidence that a school-wide nut-free policy would protect students from accidental allergic reactions. If we had a nut-free policy, it might give students with nut allergies and school personnel a false sense of security. One study shows that accidental exposures happen at higher rates in nut-free schools than in schools that allow nuts. In addition, making a school nut-free does not protect children with other potentially life-threatening food allergies such as milk, egg, wheat, soy or seafood. To date, no professional medical organizations, including the allergy specialties, have made a formal recommendation to schools to institute a school wide nut-free policy.
The approaches with food-allergic children may vary by schools and families. However, at the end of the day, what matters most is that children with food allergies are able to attend school with their peers, are not secluded from any activities, and learn in a safe environment while minimizing the risk of accidental ingestion of their food allergens.
To ensure the safest environment possible for everyone in Chadwick, regular training and education has been provided to faculty and staff. Also, teachers are given information about students with allergies along with an "action plan" covering their symptom management. Health office staff are available during school hours for any medical assistance, and if a student ever goes off campus for a school trip/out of school period, their medication is given to the trip instructor.
We value providing opportunities for students to explore the outdoors during wintertime, and we want them to be outdoors as much as possible as long as it is safe. We continue to remind students to dress appropriately for the outdoors during the winter season. We monitor the weather conditions throughout each day to ensure that the outdoor environment is safe for our students. We follow our policies regarding cold weather and air pollution very carefully. These policies can be found below:

Sincere thanks to those who participated in our 2020-2021 annual fund campaign. Your participation and generous donations are a very important step toward the larger goal of building the giving culture at Chadwick International.
This year is the fourth annual campaign, and we collected the total of 15,280,000 KRW (31% participation rate in total) to support student COVID-19-related service action. Once again, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation for your generous donations and participation in the annual fund.
Dr. Unna Huh Associate Head for External Affairs and Development
Is Our School Nut-free?
Julian Taylor Village School Principal
