Friday, November 27, 2020 NEWSLETTER Our Mission: Develop Global Citizens with Keen Minds, Exemplary Character, Self-Knowledge, and the Ability to Lead
Dear Upper School Students and Parents,
As you know, there has been a continued increase in the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Seoul metropolitan area and also here in Songdo. The school has been continually monitoring the situation closely and has made the decision to move to CI Level 3 as of Monday, November 30. All students in the Upper School will participate in distance learning until Thursday, December 3. We will re-evaluate our current CI Level and communicate with parents again on Wednesday, December 2 regarding our plans for the following week. Other COVID-19 Information:
Upcoming Events:
Parent Information Meeting We have a Parent Information Meeting this coming Wednesday, December 2 from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. that can be accessed using this link. The agenda for the meeting is as follows: Agenda:
Warm regards,
Thanks again to all of the parents who attended the information session on Grade 11-12 pathways on November 11. As noted during this session, this journey is just beginning for our Grade 10 students, and we look forward to supporting them as they move into their final years of the Upper School and plan for life after graduation.
To support your children with making good choices for Grades 11-12 pathways and courses, we are sending the most updated version of the CI Grade 11-12 Course Pathways Handbook for your reference. We will also send this document to Grade 10 students the next time that we meet with them to talk about their plans for Grade 11-12 and beyond.
If you have any questions about the CI Grade 11-12 Course Pathways Handbook or about any Grade 11-12 curriculum related matters, please do not hesitate to contact our CP Coordinator, Mr. Reagin; our DP Coordinator, Mr. Kent; or our Director of Teaching and Learning, Dr. Wrightson. College Counselors can also be contacted if there are any questions related to university admission.
This week I want to show some of the items that have been turned into my office. If you recognize any of these items, please come to the Upper School office to collect them.
Students applying to UK universities (with a January 15 deadline) must submit at least one transcript request form for a UK university by December 1. We need to collect predicted grades for UK universities before winter break. This cannot be done during break and there is not enough time to collect them when school resumes on January 11.
Submit Transcript Requests for universities with January deadlines Grade 12 students are required to submit transcript request forms one month prior to the application deadline.
A link for the Grade 12 Transcript Request Form can be found here.
Upcoming Fairs and Visits Students should continue to check the "Events" and "College Visits" tabs on Cialfo.

Teens and Technology
While it may seem like your teen is addicted to his or her phone, it's actually the content on the phone (specifically social media) that is making them want more. Social media is designed to constantly trigger a release of dopamine, which is the chemical in your brain that controls your reward system. It's no wonder that people spend hours a day on social media. But spending that much time online can make us feel unproductive, bad about ourselves, and even cause us to lose interest in activities that once brought us joy. While there is still research that needs to be done, studies suggest that social media can destroy our ability to stay focused and can negatively impact our mental health.
Here are some signs that your child's technology use might be a problem:
What parents can do:
And this is an important one: Model healthy boundaries. When parents are glued to their phones, teens learn that this is appropriate behavior. It is important to follow the limits and boundaries that you set for your children.
