Friday, December 18 2020 Village School Newsletter Dear Chadwick Village School Families,
Winter Break is now upon us. We have all had to navigate through some extremely complicated times as a community. Students and families have shown amazing resilience and support as we find ourselves pivoting between learning on and off campus. We will continue to prioritize the health and safety of your child while also factoring in the importance of your child's well-being and educational experience. We greatly appreciate all the support that you have provided in the home during this week of distance learning.
I hope that this Winter Break provides opportunities for your family to relax, play and have some fun. Please take care out there!
Warm regards,
Julian Taylor Village School Principal As Winter Break begins, we want to remind you what the curriculum will look like in the New Year. Parent workshops for each grade level will begin the week of January 18. Please click HERE to share any questions you might have regarding the curriculum and we will address them at these workshops. Some questions were raised after Kath Murdoch's presentation on December 2, and her responses will also be shared at these workshops in January. The dates and links to the upcoming parent workshops will be provided on the Curriculum Website and in future parent newsletters.
The objectives of these curriculum grade level workshops are:
During distance learning, we continue to provide a curriculum that balances student well-being with the educational experience. Teachers strive to find a balance between providing synchronous and asynchronous tasks for the well-being of students. We aim to provide a curriculum that supports the growth and development of the whole child and includes a balance of all the subject areas. If you have any questions regarding the distance learning schedule, please add them to the link HERE and we will do our best to answer them during the parent workshops in January.
The year 2020 certainly has been different (and challenging!). Our students are amazing and have risen to the challenges thrown at them. So have YOU! In the counseling office, we see that our students, parents and teachers are very, VERY tired. Our emotional energy fuel tanks are really low, leaving many of us feeling like we are teetering on the edge. Signs of this are:
As we take the time to rest and recharge over Winter Break, we need to fuel up those tanks again. Here are eight ways that we can do this: Self-Kindness
Look for Activities That Fulfill You
Sleep!
Nutrition
Practice an Attitude of Gratitude
Mindfulness/Meditation
Put Away Technology and Play Together
Strengthen Connections with Loved Ones
Normally at this time of year, we are doing our winter concerts. Given the current COVID-19 restrictions, it was not possible to have concerts this year. Instead, our Grade 5 music classes did a celebration of learning in the Main Theater. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are not allowed to sing or play wind instruments. We also had to limit the number of students in the theater, so we were only able to combine two classes together at a time. We shared the learning that they have done this semester including some of the compositions the students had created. We concluded our celebration with a performance of a song that we had been learning in class. Below, please find links to videos of the performance part of each celebration for your enjoyment.
Congratulations to our Grade 5 students on an excellent performance.
Your child's Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA)/MAP assessment data will be available in January. This will be emailed to the address that is registered with the school system.
The MAP assessment is the Measures of Progress test that our Grade 3, 4 and 5 students complete. We expect all students to have completed this by Friday, December 18, 2020. Students in Grade 3, along with students in Grades 4 and 5 who are new to Chadwick, will only have one set of testing data. The majority of students in Grades 4 and 5 will have multiple data sets so that you can see their academic growth over time.
Please note that these scores are not used for grading, ranking, the college application process, or any other formal assessment of your student. They are first and foremost tools that teachers use to monitor student growth over time. As well, they provide our teachers and administrators with information about curricular strengths, areas that need support, and what skills have been securely established. As a parent, the information that the MAP test provides will generally be consistent with what your child's teacher has observed and assessed themselves.
Our office will be closed from Monday, December 21, 2020, to Friday, January 8, 2021, for Winter Break. Should you require immediate assistance, please contact the office via email at songdo-villageoffice@chadwickschool.org.
Take a photo of your child reading in the wackiest of places over Winter Break and email it to homeroom teachers in January. Some examples could be a photo of your child reading upside down on the sofa, under the table, on the table, in their pajamas, doing a yoga pose, maybe with wacky hair too, or maybe outside in the park (if it's safe), etc. It's challenging, it's fun and it's reading. Share the photo with your child's homeroom teacher when you return in January. The goal is to encourage your child to have fun and continue reading over the holiday (in any form and any language: menus, maps, signs, books, etc.).
Greenpeace Korea has recently started an artwork competition called "Children's Sea Protection Artwork Competition" for students who are passionate about protecting the marine environment or love drawing and painting. Participating in this artwork competition is a great opportunity for students to develop their interest and love for the marine environment. Please look below for competition details.
