Friday, January 29, 2021 NEWSLETTER Our Mission: Develop Global Citizens with Keen Minds, Exemplary Character, Self-Knowledge, and the Ability to Lead
Dear Upper School Students and Parents,
It was a joy to once again be with students this week. Everyone was happy to see each other, and it was such a nice atmosphere. We will continue to enjoy these moments when students come to campus. Hopefully we are nearing a light at the end of the tunnel with some of the current restrictions. Come what may, we will continue to be positive and safe. Students, please remember that following the safety guidelines that exist at school and in the broader community are important in protecting us all. We all need to do our part in reducing the risk of spreading COVID-19 in order for school routines to return to normal.
The schedule below is the current plan for Upper School students through the Lunar New Year. This will most likely remain the plan; however, if conditions continue to improve, the Upper School could potentially bring more students back on campus. To date, the Upper School has not brought back as many students as other divisions. As a school, we are limited in the total number of students that can be on campus at one time. Our older students have been able to better adapt to distance learning; therefore, we have brought back higher numbers of our younger students first. Parent Information Meeting We have a Parent Information Meeting this coming Friday, February 5 from 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. that can be accessed using this link. The agenda for the meeting is as follows:
Warm regards,
It is already clear that 2021 is going to require us all to continue demonstrating high levels of responsibility, compassion, perseverance and flexibility, as the notices below illustrate. As a school, we are adapting how we support the Grade 10 transition to our diploma pathways, and we still await confirmation from the International Baccalaureate Organization regarding the Diploma Programme exams in May. On a positive note, we have started to welcome students back on campus this week.
At this time, our aim is to provide students, parents and staff with the information and support required to keep moving forward. Please see the announcements below, join our Parent Meeting on February 5, and contact me if you have any further questions (rkent@chadwickschool.org).
1. IB Diploma Programme - May Exam Session As communicated before the Winter Break, the IB is currently planning to hold the May 2021 examination session as scheduled. This is subject to ongoing monitoring. Schools were surveyed about their circumstances earlier in January, and further information from the IB is expected in February. The message to Grade 12 students at this time is to continue working toward the May exams. You will, of course, be notified of any change.
2. Mock Exams Related to the information above, we have rescheduled the in-school mock (practice) exams to give ourselves the opportunity to adapt to the IB announcement regarding the May exams. The purpose and practicality of the mock exams is dependent upon the IB's decision. The new provisional date is March 9 - 16.
3. Grade 10 MYP Personal Project The original timeline for the MYP Personal Project was based on the date the moderation sample was to be submitted to the IB for external marking. The IB has revised this date due to the impact of the global pandemic. The date for the submission of the final product is now Friday, April 9 and the date for the final report is Friday, April 30. Further details about the exhibition will follow.
4. Grade 10 Transition - Subject Fair Each year at this time there is a Grade 10 Subject Fair to inform students of the three Diploma Pathways (IB Career-related Programme, the CI Diploma pathway and the IB Diploma Programme). Due to the current situation, the Subject Fair will now be hosted online. Please see the summary of key dates below. The initial information was shared with parents and students in November 2020. You will note that there is a Parent Meeting on Friday, February 5 at which further information will be shared.
Our guiding principle is to ensure that students make an informed decision about the most appropriate pathway to support the next steps in their educational and college aspirations.
Mr. Kent (DP Coordinator)
Upper School parents are invited to attend an information session on Korean University Admissions that will be led by Dr. Hannah Yang. This session will cover a variety of factors in the admission decision including how Korean universities evaluate applicants from international schools like CI, the university application process, standardized test requirements, and how you can help your child to select appropriate Korean universities.
Date: Wednesday, February 17
Please be aware that this information session does not cover non-Korean citizens applying to Korean universities or Songdo Global Campuses in Korea (the admission process is quite different). If your child is a non-Korean citizen with non-Korean parents considering Korean universities, please contact Dr. Yang to set up an individual appointment.
If you have any further questions, please call us at 032-250-5229 or send an email to the College Counseling assistant, Ms. Mia Cho (mcho@chadwickschool.org).
Grade 10 Course Selection Meetings We are looking forward to meeting with every Grade 10 parent and student regarding course selections for the class of 2023. These individual meetings will occur from February 22 to April 2. We want parents to attend these meetings with their child. Students will be excused from their classes to attend the meetings.
Every meeting will include one member of the academic curriculum team and one of the college counselors. Please understand that this is not a college counseling planning session. It is too early to begin building a specific college list (that will be done next year in our weekly College Seminar). This meeting is to make sure that each student is selecting courses that will prepare him or her for certain career paths and/or college majors.
We will send a separate email to Grade 10 parents with registration instructions. Registration will open on February 8 and all of the meetings will be conducted online using Zoom.
College Board SAT Subject Test Updates As you may have read this past week, the College Board announced that they are phasing out SAT Subject Tests and removing the optional essay section of the SAT after the 2020-2021 school year. Very few universities were using SAT Subject tests and the optional essay subscore of the SAT.
The overwhelming majority of universities that once required the SAT, ACT or SAT Subject Tests have gone test optional for the Class of 2021. Most universities have yet to make a final decision for the Class of 2022. We expect that most decisions for the Class of 2022 will be made in April and May. Some universities have already continued the optional policy, and the University of California will no longer use SAT/ACT in admission. In a recent Inside Higher Education poll of over 400 U.S. university admission deans, the majority (including 79% of private universities) believed that they would stop requiring standardized testing in the future.
Grade 11 students are currently meeting with college counselors and are encouraged to discuss standardized testing plans (if any). Students in Grades 9 and 10 are discouraged from taking the SAT/ACT until more is known about the future of these tests. Never before has the SAT been less important!
All students are encouraged to focus on academics and activities. These will influence your academic record, your application essays, and your references (the things that are required by all universities).

On January 27, 2021, a donation ceremony for IT devices was held at Chadwick International. The donor is David Jung, a Grade 10 student who won the grand prize at the '00 Junior Software Creation Contest' to cultivate future software designers. He was selected from 6,335 people in 2,403 teams to be awarded IT devices valuing 20 million won. David donated this award to Chadwick's design classes. David is a talented young man who wants to use innovative technology to make a better and more peaceful world, just as the IB mission teaches. David is a good example of a "risk-taker" and "inquirer," two attributes of the IB learner profile.
The donation ceremony was attended by David Jung; his mother Ms. Jang; Mr. Ted Hill; Dr. Unna Huh, who is in charge of volunteering and donation activities; and Katy Seul, design teacher, department chair, and David's mentor who supported him in this contest.
Mr. McGrath Upper School Principal
Mr. Kent (DP Coordinator)
