Friday, January 29 2021 Village School Newsletter Dear Chadwick Village School Families,
We are all so happy to have students back on campus this week. It has been most pleasing to observe students transition into school routines so quickly. We appreciate the ongoing support families are providing with distance learning.
Many parents have signed up for conferences that will take place on Thursday, February 4. Sign-up information has been shared with all families. Classroom teachers will reshare the Parent-Teacher conference sign-up information in the Sunday newsletter. We will close sign-ups on Monday at 3 p.m.
Each year, we provide the opportunity for our students to experience Global Play Day. Read HERE to find out why play is important. It is likely that we will scale down our participation this year due to the current circumstances of learning on and off campus and COVID-19 factors. However, we will endeavour to incorporate elements of Global Play Day into the schedule for the coming week.
Read, read, read. World Read Aloud Day celebrates shared reading at school and at home. Teachers and administrators will be reading in person and online. Students and classroom teachers continue to share the love of reading, and parents are welcome to find their child's favorite book and read together. Celebrating read aloud day can also include making a bookmark, dressing up as your favorite character, or reading about your favorite author. Enjoy that special time sharing books with your child.
Math is an important part of our daily life; however, many students do not see the value of math outside the classroom. Help your children learn to enjoy math in their daily lives through math walks, asking great questions, and playing games. Read more HERE.
Students have been back in school face to face with each other for just a short period of time. Their social skills are rusty! It's going to take some time to rebuild them. It's what learning is all about. When students face social challenges our teachers and counselors aim to help them reflect on the situation, identify their emotions, and consider the impact of their actions and words on each other. This is part of developing empathy and understanding. Understand that conflicts are a normal part of childhood and that there are two sides to every story. To have the full understanding of what is happening we need both perspectives. Recognize that at present, students (and adults!) are carrying more stress and more anxiety due to COVID-19 and dealing with the "new normal." This stress shows up in different ways, including less resilience in dealing with friendship issues and conflict. Emotional energy tanks are already depleted just through dealing with the new normal. Make time to listen to your child. Often they will talk when playing a game or spending time with you doing something. Look to create opportunities or space for this. Encourage your children to express their emotions. We can help them identify their emotions and let them know that it is okay to have those feelings. A good follow through is to help them find ways to express their emotions in a constructive way. Ask them questions such as:
Understand that their emotional tanks are running lower than normal and help them find ways to fill these. It might be through quality time as a family doing something together. It could be by giving them more time to play and create and rest. Talk with your child about the things that fill their emotional tanks and encourage them to do something each day for their self-care. Here are some examples of Chadwick students talking about the things that make them happy. Look for the small moments of joy and notice them with your child. It can be as simple as noticing a beautiful sky, calling a loved one to say hi, or observing some positive behavior and taking the time to share what you saw and how it made you feel with your child.

Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth T: HK–(852) 3104-3494
Read, read, read.
