Friday, March 5, 2021 NEWSLETTER Our Mission: Develop Global Citizens with Keen Minds, Exemplary Character, Self-Knowledge, and the Ability to Lead
Dear Upper School Students and Parents,
As communicated on Wednesday, our plans for the next two weeks will follow the hybrid learning scenario outlined below. I would also like to highlight the following information:
Stay well. We look forward to the next time we are together. As always, please contact us immediately if you have any questions or concerns.
Warm regards,
I hope that everyone got a little rest during the long weekend.
We have put stricter rules in place regarding seating in the cafeteria. We need to be able to know where a student has sat in case contact-tracing is ever needed. On Tuesday, it seemed that some Grade 9 and 10 students were a little confused. I sent seat numbers to you and your advisors so that you know where you should be sitting going forward. I have also posted a seating chart on the wall as you come into the cafeteria to help you locate your seat number. Please also remember to follow physical distancing guidelines in the hallways and lounges. We cannot have students gathering in close groups in any area of the school.
Spring is just around the corner. As the weather improves, I hope that some of you will take your breaks and free time outside in the sun.
Ms. Adisa (Dean of Students)
Transcript Requests Students or parents who need an Upper School transcript must fill out a transcript request form. Students or parents should allow at least one week advance notice if you need a transcript for any reason. Students who are applying to programs that require recommendation letters should give teachers and counselors at least 3-4 weeks advance notice of any deadlines, and they should also fill out a transcript request form.
Transcript Request Form for students in Grade 9-11.
Transcript Request form for students in Grade 12.
Grade 10 Course Selection Meetings If students are on campus the day of their meeting, they should find a quiet spot on campus to have their meeting. They might be able to use their advisor's classroom (with their advisor's permission). They are also permitted to use the library as long as they are using headphones, or they can use the conference room in the College Counseling office.
If parents do not have the Zoom app on your devices, you will be prompted to download and install Zoom when you click on a Zoom link. We strongly encourage all parents to download the Zoom app now to make sure that it is working. You can download the Zoom Client for Meetings here.
If you have never used Zoom, here is a video explaining how to join a meeting.
CI Alumni Panel Last week, the Office of Alumni Relations and the CI-CS Collaboration Club hosted the first ever Alumni Panel with graduates from Chadwick International and Chadwick School. If you were not able to watch the event live, we encourage all students and parents to watch the video recording. To access the video, you must have a Chadwick email. Parents are encouraged to watch it together with your child or to use your child's email.
Korea World University Fair 2021 The Korea World University Fair started this past Tuesday. There are still three days of information sessions remaining. Many of the same universities that participated in the virtual fair this past September are participating again. The virtual fair is being hosted on the Cialfo website which is also our college counseling software. Students and parents received a registration email from Cialfo earlier this year. Once you are logged in, click on the "Events" tab on the left side. Click on the Korea World University Fair and register for any events that interest you.
Friday, March 5 (3 p.m. and 6 p.m.): Admission officers will be available for students and parents to stop at their virtual booth at any time during the two hour session (just like an in-person college fair). University representatives will have information to share with you and be available to answer any questions that you might have. More information about the virtual fair and a list of suggested questions that you might want to ask the university representatives is available here. You may register for multiple sessions during the same time slot (these are treated like virtual office hours).
Saturday, March 6 - Sunday, March 7: There are special Information Sessions offered over the weekend covering a variety of topics like Preparing University Applications, Funding and Scholarships for Australian Universities, Studying in Europe, etc.).

Sleep Awareness Week Do you remember the last time that you got a full night's sleep? For many of us, it's difficult to get a full eight hours of sleep every night; work takes up a lot of time, homework can feel like hours, and then there are so many distractions late at night to keep us awake. But not getting enough sleep can have lasting effects on our physical and mental health. According to the Sleep Foundation, people who feel sleepy 5-7 days a week report high rates of headaches, irritability and feeling unwell. And the benefits of sleep are profound:
Not sleeping enough has been linked to depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
On top of all of that, living in a pandemic can have a negative impact on sleep. Here are some of the challenges to sleep during a pandemic:
This year, take on the sleep challenge during Sleep Awareness Week from March 14-20! For seven days, do these things to get better sleep:

Back in November, some of CI's Upper School students were invited to participate in the Seoul International Writers Festival with support from the MS/US Librarian Ms. Catherine Buchanan and Anthony Jacobs, Language and Literature Department Chair. The students read a passage from Chung Serang's story, "You Can Have My Voice."
Students submitted questions and participated in a discussion of Chung Serang's work in the library. You can view a recording of this discussion here.
Participants from the senior class were Esther Yubin Lee, Keenan Evans, Claire Yoonsuh Kim and Sid Lamichhane. The junior class was represented by Brent Yoo and Claudia Sersen, and Paula Garcia Valabuena participated from the sophomore class. Author Chung Serang and members of the Seoul International Writers Festival were inspired by the conversation and questions of the students. We hope that this collaboration can become an annual experience for our Upper School students.
You can listen to author Chung Serang respond to a question submitted by Brent Yoo, class of 2022. This begins at the 1:00:00 mark of this video.

Mr. McGrath Upper School Principal
