Friday, Mar. 5 2021 Principal Ms. Jacqui Cameron Dear Chadwick International Middle School Families,
It feels as though spring is on the horizon for us. This week, when I was out walking our new puppy, Kuma, I saw blossoms on the trees! I find this very exciting and hopeful. To me, spring signals rebirth and growth, and we need that, especially this year. This is a beautiful time of year for all of us, and I would like to celebrate it with you and all of our students.
The Middle School students continue to have the opportunity to go outside during their break times. We encourage them to move, play and have some fun. When they are here on campus, this is such a joyful time for them as it is their opportunity to be social and to connect with friends. The weather in spring provides new opportunities for our students to connect with one another and be outside together.
Currently, our Middle School students and faculty are preparing for the upcoming Student-Led Conferences on April 9. We have shifted away from what has been done in the past, and we are excited to share our new process this year. This January and February, all of our students set learning goals with the following guidelines in mind:
Over these last several months, our students have been working hard to make progress on their goals. We hope that by participating in this process, students will become truly connected to their learning and mindful of where they are headed. We also hope that they can celebrate all of their progress thus far with you and their Advisor at their Student-Led Conferences. We hope that you enjoy participating in this event.
With that, I wish you a beautiful weekend ahead.
Be well everyone, and take good care.
Best, Jacqui Cameron Middle School Principal Upcoming Dates & Things to Note February Coffee Meeting For those of you who were unable to join us, you can view a livestream of the event or view the presentation slides.
MS Parent Concerns Moving forward, we will post all of our responses to MS parent concerns (that were shared either at our MS Parent Coffees or through the MS Parent Representatives) on our Parent Portal. Our most recent concerns will be addressed and posted to our portal early next week.
Student in the Spotlight In the Middle School, we would like to celebrate one of our Grade 7 students Shannon Kim! Shannon won an award from the Idea Contest ("Ice Cream Edu" - digital learning company). Over 7,000 students participated in this contest and Shannon won the first prize! Her idea was a mobile app to introduce English books to Korean children.
Read more about Shannon and her award in this article. Library Corner Ms. Catherine Buchanan Back in November, some of CI's Upper School students were invited to participate in the Seoul International Writers Festival with support from the MS/US Librarian Ms. Catherine Buchanan and Anthony Jacobs, Language and Literature Department Chair. The students read a passage from Chung Serang's story, "You Can Have My Voice."
Students submitted questions and participated in a discussion of Chung Serang's work in the library. You can view a recording of this discussion here.
Participants from the senior class were Esther Yubin Lee, Keenan Evans, Claire Yoonsuh Kim and Sid Lamichhane. The junior class was represented by Brent Yoo and Claudia Sersen, and Paula Garcia Valabuena participated from the sophomore class. Author Chung Serang and members of the Seoul International Writers Festival were inspired by the conversation and questions of the students. We hope that this collaboration can become an annual experience for our Upper School students.
You can listen to author Chung Serang respond to a question submitted by Brent Yoo, class of 2022. This begins at the 1:00:00 mark of this video. We are delighted to invite socially active and creative young students from Chadwick International Middle School to take part in a virtual global leadership development program organized by the Global Social Leaders and Chadwick International. This training is part of the award earned by Greener is Cleaner in the 2019-2020 GSL Global Goals Competition.
"During my journey leading up to winning last year's Global Goals Competition, I have learned a lot about how to lead a group of individuals to pursue a common goal. The experience sparked great motivation in me to take practical action upon my passion." The interactive workshops and the opportunity to develop a social action project during the GSL Catalyst will help students understand how to Lead by Example, along with Greener is Cleaner.
For more details and information, visit the Chadwick International GSL Catalyst Programme website. (by Jihyeon "Cherry" Sung - Greener is Cleaner) The suicide of 37 aspiring youth happens every day (The Korean Herald, 2019)… This is the reality: in other words, the "dry, yeastless factuality" of South Korea, where students are pressured to cope with the overly competitive academic environment. Felix is a newfound organization by two seventh grade students: Elin Kim and Eugenie Kwon. The organization has its focus on the enhancement of mental well-being (UN SDG 3) of youth. However, it has four more specified goals and projects. The first goal is to improve the general mental well-being of our community. Founders of Felix acknowledge that students all over the world, and especially those in Chadwick International, are expected to successfully cope with the fatigue and "mental health deterioration". In order to attain the state of proficient mental health, the founders of Felix have devised an Instagram account (@felix___msa), and have created a "Highlights" section composed of daily mental health reminders. The second goal is to stress the significance of mental well being. Despite the regulations that aim to improve students' mental health, it seems evident that mental wellbeing is not considered as a significant problem due to certain "society standards". Hence, Felix aims to alter the "norm". The organization will take action by putting up posters that emphasize students' mental well being. The third goal of Felix is to support those facing mental hardships. Felix will fund those who don't have access to mental health care. The fourth goal of Felix is to foster new friendships. In order to achieve this goal, Felix will connect students within the Chadwick community ((ies): Chadwick Palos Verdes and Chadwick International). Elin Kim and Eugenie Kwon will endeavor to achieve these goals, hoping for a better future. By: Seohyeon "Elin" Kim and Eugenie Kwon College Counseling CI Alumni Panel Last week, the Office of Alumni Relations and the CI-CS Collaboration Club hosted the first ever Alumni Panel with graduates from Chadwick International and Chadwick School. We encourage all Middle School parents to watch this video. The topics of conversation are mature, but they are appropriate for Middle School students to hear. To access the video, you must have a Chadwick email, so parents will need to use their child's email account.
Korea World University Fair 2021 The Korea World University Fair started this past Tuesday. There are still three days of information sessions remaining. Many of the same universities that participated in the virtual fair this past September are participating again. The virtual fair is being hosted on the Cialfo website which is also our college counseling software. Students and parents received a registration email from Cialfo earlier this year. Once you are logged in, click on the "Events" tab on the left side. Click on the Korea World University Fair and register for any events that interest you.
Friday, March 5 (3 p.m. and 6 p.m.): Admission officers will be available for students and parents to stop at their virtual booth at any time during the two hour session (just like an in-person college fair). University representatives will have information to share with you and be available to answer any questions that you might have. More information about the virtual fair and a list of suggested questions that you might want to ask the university representatives is available here. You may register for multiple sessions during the same time slot (these are treated like virtual office hours).
Saturday, March 6 - Sunday, March 7: There are special Information Sessions offered over the weekend covering a variety of topics like Preparing University Applications, Funding and Scholarships for Australian Universities, Studying in Europe, etc.).
Principal Ms. Jacqui Cameron

(by Jihyeon "Cherry" Sung - Greener is Cleaner)
