Friday, April 9, 2021 NEWSLETTER Our Mission: Develop Global Citizens with Keen Minds, Exemplary Character, Self-Knowledge, and the Ability to Lead
Dear Upper School Students and Parents,
It has been an exciting couple of weeks at school with students enjoying their Outdoor Education experiences. Students camping on campus in their tents has created a real buzz around the whole school. All students, whether they be our Village School students, those in the Middle School or other Upper School grades, think it is really cool to see the students who are participating in Outdoor Education. Above I have shared some pictures from last week's Grade 9 Outdoor Education. Grade 11 completed their experience today, and Grade 10 is planned for next week.
Upper School Information Meeting Thank you to all of you who were able to join us last Wednesday for our Upper School Information meeting. As usual, if you were not able to join us, we are happy to provide a recording of the presentations, the slides and the Q&A. There were a number of student presentations in the last meeting which I would like to highlight below because of their importance.
COVID-19 Community Fundraiser - Video Presentation This fundraiser is a Wellness Committee initiative to raise money for those less fortunate than ourselves who have suffered during COVID-19. The project supports the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association. The fundraiser continues until April 23. Please contribute what you can to this worthy cause.
Science Community Project Kit Fundraiser - Video Presentation This fundraiser is focused on raising money to donate science kits to students in the broader community who do not have the opportunities and resources that we do. The project supports the Green Umbrella Children Foundation. The fundraiser continues until April 23. Please contribute how you can to this worthy cause.
The BizWiz Project - please review the article that follows.
Next Week's Schedule: The schedule for next week maintains our basic approach to having two grades on campus and two grades off campus at any time. This week, we are able to bring Grade 11 on campus for extra days because Grade 10 will be participating in Outdoor Education. Warm regards,
[BizWiz] Sign Up to Help a Student Startup Venture - Logan, Tom, Jiwon, Jun and David
Dear Members of the CI Community,
Hello, we are Logan, Tom, Jiwon, and Jun from Grade 12 alongside David Jung from Grade 10. We gladly appreciate this opportunity to spread the word of BizWiz, a startup enterprise that we have managed to create from scratch.
BizWiz was created with the goal of investing all of its future profits back into Chadwick International. We plan to benefit future Dolphins by constructing a student acceleration fund called the "Chadwick Accelerator for Entrepreneurs" (CHACE Fund). All profits obtained from our startup BizWiz will be funneled into this fund, which will financially support future student startup or entrepreneurship projects at CI. Simply put, the CHACE Fund will act as another source of finance for student-led initiatives along with the CI Annual Fund. Whereas the Annual Fund supports service-related activities, the CHACE fund will specifically support initiatives that encourage entrepreneurial spirit at CI.
BizWiz is a multi-sided survey platform that allows small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to better understand their target consumers and ultimately conduct market research. On our platform, SMEs will be able to construct and register micro-surveys based on the real-world challenges that they are facing at a reasonable price. Although filling in bubbles and checkboxes is nothing new, BizWiz will revolutionize the formula with novel and engaging surveying methods that will forge stronger bonds between SMEs and consumers. Survey registration fees will vary based on the length of the survey and response size, but it will be extremely affordable for SMEs.
You can help support the growth of BizWiz by creating an account on our platform by following the registration process here. Once you have registered for the platform, you can choose to participate in surveys and earn points. All profits from BizWiz will support CI student activities. If you have questions, please contact us at (lyoon2021@chadwickschool.org).
Outdoor Education Congratulations to our Grade 9 students (last week) and our Grade 11 students (this week) on finishing their Outdoor Education adventures. Everyone seems to be having a good time, and the weather has been pretty good. Grade 10 and 12 are getting set up for their programs in the coming weeks. It is great to get outside after a long winter indoors with online classes. Spring is Here! Everyone is enjoying the warmer weather at last, but the warmer weather creates a temptation to eat lunch outside. Please remember, as I have mentioned before, there is still the need at the moment to enable contact tracing. Therefore, we must have all students eat their lunch in their designated seats in the cafeteria or in their advisory if that has been planned. I encourage students to go sit outside and enjoy the weather with friends after they have finished eating, as long as they have their masks on and maintain physical distancing.
Ms. Adisa (Dean of Students)
We are sad to announce the departure of Mr. Josh Coblyn at the end of this school year. Mr. Coblyn spent the past seven years as an English teacher and college counselor, most recently serving as the Assistant Director of College Counseling. In addition to helping students and parents through the college process, he has played a vital role in planning and developing our College Seminars for students in Grade 11 and 12. Mr. Coblyn created several lesson plans which are now integral components of our College Seminar in order to help students on their journey of self-discovery. He will be missed as a member of our team.
When Mr. Coblyn shared the news of his departure, we conducted an international search for his replacement and received over thirty applications from qualified candidates from around the world. We had three stages of interviews which included semi-finalists and finalists, and we are very pleased to announce the hiring of Ms. Carrie Guillen.
Ms. Guillen received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Whittier College, and her Master of Arts in Child and Family Counseling from the University of San Francisco. For the past 15 years, Ms. Guillen has worked as a College Counselor at Los Altos High School, Brent International School of Manila, the American International School of Egypt, and Colegio Karl C Parrish in Columbia. In addition to her role as a College Counselor, Ms. Guillen has served as an IB CAS Coordinator, IB Service-learning Coordinator, School Counselor, and AP Coordinator. Ms. Guillen has earned a reputation as a very hard-working, highly professional college counselor who has successfully fostered positive relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and university admission representatives from around the world. We are very fortunate and pleased to announce that she will be joining us this July.
The College Counseling team has a plan in place to transition Mr. Coblyn's responsibilities over to Ms. Guillen this summer. The College Counseling team will work closely with Ms. Guillen to ensure a smooth transition for students and parents.

April is Counseling Awareness Month! Every April, we try to bring awareness to the counseling profession and appreciation for counselors everywhere. But most importantly, this is a time to work toward breaking the stigma of seeking support from a counselor and to encourage members of our community to reach out to a counselor in times of need.
Koreans are fortunate to have access to well-trained mental health professionals and medication. However, there is still an internalized stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment in Korean culture that keeps many Koreans from seeking out therapy. Well-being is one of the top priorities at Chadwick International, which is why the school has counselors in the Village, Middle, and Upper School.
Chadwick's counselors are trained to do short-term counseling with students and to talk to parents about serious mental health concerns. They can also recommend outside counseling services for families who need them. Families can get counseling referrals from their doctors, but in addition to hospital-based care, here are the most commonly recommended counseling services in our community:
All of the services listed above are available in both Korean and English, which is great news for our non-Korean families and students.
Seeking help for your mental health is a sign of strength, and it only takes one phone call to start the journey. If you would like to talk to the Upper School counselor about what counseling might look like, send her an email (mwickham@chadwickschool.org) to start the conversation.
Ms. Wickham (US Counselor)
Last week's Grade 9 Outdoor Education program was a huge success! We had beautiful weather throughout the program. Students hiked the Incheon Ridge Trail, kayaked Songdo's Northern Waterway, participated in reflective activities, group initiatives and fun games in the local parks, and camped on campus with their classmates. Students had time to connect and reconnect with each other while learning more about themselves and their community.
Thank you for the preparation that you undertook to prepare your child for this program. We are proud to share in these adventures with your child, and look forward to many more OE experiences to come!
You can find pictures of the program in our Google Photos Grade 9 Album.
Have any questions? Please send us an email at songdo-outdoored@chadwickschool.org.
Thank you for supporting the OE program!

Ms. Adisa (Dean of Students)
Ms. Guillen은 Whittier College에서 심리학 학사학위를 받은 후 the University of San Francisco에서 아동 가족 상담 석사학위를 받았습니다. Los Altos High School, Brent International School of Manila, the American International School of Egypt 와 Colegio Karl C Parrish in Columbia에서 칼리지 카운셀러로 재직하였습니다.

Ms. Wickham (US Counselor)
