Friday, April 16 2021 NEWSLETTER Our Mission: Develop Global Citizens with Keen Minds, Exemplary Character, Self-Knowledge, and the Ability to Lead
Please check next week's schedule below. Warm regards,
We would like to share our 2021-2022 Academic Year Calendar. While we do not anticipate making any major changes to the calendar, should the need arise for a change, we will communicate well in advance. Grade 11 - Core Focus Day On Monday, April 12, all Grade 11 students were on an alternative schedule to support their progress with the "core" components of their respective programs. In the IB Diploma Programme, the core consists of Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity & Service. In the IB Career-related Programme, the core includes Personal and Professional Skills, Service Learning, and the Reflective Project. In the CI High School Diploma, the core is made up of the Senior Project, and Creativity, Activity & Service.
The purpose of the "core" in our Grade 11 and 12 program is to:
In meeting the outcomes of the core programs, students demonstrate the attributes of the Chadwick Mission: Global Citizens, Keen Minds, Exemplary Character, Self-Knowledge and the Ability to Lead, as well as the Core Values: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Fairness and Compassion.
On Monday, students heard how their achievements in the core could not only be very valuable preparation for the college application process in terms of the skills gained (e.g. academic writing) but also as "a point of difference" for them as applicants. The core program provides opportunities to show a passion for and a commitment to a subject or a cause beyond "good grades" and the confines of a subject class. The key message was: "Many students achieve the grades necessary to meet college course requirements, what is different about you?" The core is one place where that "difference" can be discovered and expressed.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Grade 11 teachers for supervising and supporting our students with the core components.
Update - IB Diploma Programme Non-exam Route & Predicted Grades In last week's newsletter, I shared that we were working toward a final date of April 20 for the submission of IB Diploma Predicted Grades. The IB has since revised this deadline to May 11, due to the volume of inquiries generated by the process that they have put in place for the COVID-19 impacted May 2021 session. This date applies to all schools and is not a result of Chadwick pursuing the non-exam route.
As a result, we are not able to share the finalized Predicted Grades in all subjects before April 20 as previously advised because we are waiting for responses to our inquiries with the IB. We sincerely hope that this matter is resolved as soon as possible.
If you have specific concerns, please contact Mr. Richard Kent, IB Diploma Coordinator at rkent@chadwickschool.org.
Current Grade 9 Students Choosing Courses for Grade 10 It is time for Grade 9 students to solidify their course choices for the 2021-2022 school year. This week, Grade 9 students received a Google Form via email that they can use to complete this process. Students have choices in the areas of the arts and design.
There is also student choice in the area of languages; however, we do ask that students continue studying the same language that they studied in Grade 9 if at all possible. Switching language courses is not conducive to developing proficiency in any one language. Students are encouraged to work toward high levels of proficiency in a language which can help them to become more internationally-minded global citizens who are better prepared for life in an increasingly globalized world.
We ask that Grade 9 parents discuss the course choice form with their children and help them to make choices that prepare them not only for next school year but also for their longer-term future. If parents or students have queries about their course choices, please have them contact our Director of Teaching and Learning Dr. Wrightson at bwrightson@chadwickschool.org.

Last week's G11 OE program was a success! We were lucky to have another week of beautiful weather. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom on our hike along the Incheon Ridge Trail. Kayaking Songdo's Northern Waterway allowed students to explore a part of Songdo from a different perspective while learning paddling skills through kayak challenges and games. Our group building day took place in the local parks where students participated in reflective activities, group initiatives and fun games. In the evenings, CI turned into a campground where students ate dinners, debriefed their days, and played games with classmates before sleeping in their tents. It was a full three days of OE!
Thank you for the preparation you undertook to prepare your child for this program. We are happy we had the opportunity to share in these adventures with your child, and we look forward to many more OE experiences to come!
You can find pictures from the program on our Google Photos G11 Album. Have any questions? Please send us an email at songdo-outdoored@chadwickschool.org.
Thank you for supporting the OE program!

Dear Upper School Parents,
My name is Susie Lee, and I am a Chadwick alumna from the Class of 2017, currently working with Mr. Alex McMillan as an intern for the EdTech Department.
I was part of the team that developed the Individual Yearbook, which was the presentation that the students gave during last week's MYP Student-led Conferences for Grade 10 and 11. We are curious to hear your feedback about the presentation and discuss how to improve upon it for next year.
If you'd like to have a quick Zoom meeting with us sharing questions and suggestions regarding the Individual Yearbook and ePortfolios, please let us know by filling out this form (Korean Version, English Version). The meeting will be held in both English and Korean.
Thank you so much for your kind help! I can't wait to meet all of you.
Yours sincerely,
Mr. McGrath Upper School Principal
Theory of Knowledge (ToK), the Extended Essay (EE) 그리고 Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS)로 구성되며 IB CP에서는 Personal and Professional Skills, Service Learning과 Reflective Project로, CI 고등학교 디플로마에서는 Senior Project와 Creativity, Activity & Service로 구성됩니다.
Director of Teaching and Learning인 Dr. Wrightson, bwrightson@chadwickschool.org 앞으로 문의하여 주시기 바랍니다.
