Middle School Outdoor Education

Adventures designed for growth

Outdoor Education in the Middle School is an exciting opportunity for students to indulge in deep reflection that promotes character identity and growth, against the backdrop of rich Korean culture and natural landscapes.

As courses get longer in duration and farther away in location, practical skills are sharpened and students must rely more heavily on themselves and others to ensure the success of the group.

Activities such as hiking and kayaking create shared experiences that help students build mutual trust, push past perceived limitations and forge lasting bonds with peers outside their typical social circles. They return home with a newfound sense of confidence, community and accomplishment that carries over into every area of their lives.

Basecamp courses in Grade 6 and 7 prepare students for their first expedition course. In basecamp courses, students break into small groups for daily activities like biking, hiking, paddling and rock climbing before returning to a central camp at night. For their first expedition in Grade 8, students transfer the skills they've been practicing to hike and move camp each day in small groups. Expedition courses provide opportunities for each group to have a unique experience.

Courses are designed to challenge students physically, mentally and emotionally in variable and highly supportive environments. Communication, respect for differences, inclusion and trust are critical life skills practiced throughout these courses. As they work together to navigate new territory, they practice listening to and supporting each other through their challenges and successes. Students also learn about the importance of self-care and are introduced to the practices of monitored solo time and journaling as vehicles for self-reflection.

Exploring the diversity within different ecosystems and local cultures like the Han River and the mountains of Gangwon Province cultivates an appreciation of Korea’s history and habitats. The practice of Leave No Trace (LNT) Principles promotes personal responsibility through sustainable camping and living. Students see firsthand that their choices have a direct impact on their environment.
