Grade 8 English students are studying graphic novels and exploring how dialogue and visual techniques develop storylines and themes in literature.
They are currently reading Squire, a graphic novel about young people in an unequal society. The characters strive to prove their loyalty to the empire while grappling with realizations about their own cultural identities — and how those identities may be valued or dismissed by those in power. It is a story of friendship and transformation that resonates with young adult audiences everywhere.
In this lesson, students analyzed the techniques used by the authors of Squire to show character and plot development and worked in groups to answer literary analysis questions.
