THE HOMEWORK MYTH presentation by Alfie Kohn
Seonsook

We cordially invite you to the American author's visit to Chadwick International.

Mr. Alfie Kohn is the author of 14 books on education, parenting and human behavior including

PUNISHED BY REWARDS (1993), THE SCHOOLS OUR CHILDREN DESERVE (1999), UNCONDITIONAL PARENTING (2005), THE HOMEWORK MYTH (2006), and THE MYTH OF THE SPOILED CHILD (2014).

Mr.Kohn will be presenting THE HOMEWORK MYTH: Questioning Achievement Pressures in (and after) School.

Below is an excerpt of his presentation.

We know that homework causes stress and conflict, frustration and exhaustion. But at least, we tell ourselves, it teaches our children independence and good work habits, "reinforces" what they've been taught, and helps them to become more successful learners.

Or does it? Alfie Kohn, the American author of The Homework Myth and many other books on education, reviews the usual defenses of homework and finds that none is actually supported by research, logic, or experience. Moreover, making children work a second shift after school is over-represents just one part of a larger effort to pressure them to work harder, get good grades, and score better on exams – all of which has intellectual as well as emotional costs.
