Grampy's Bedtime Story Book Cover

Grade 4 students recently had the opportunity to hear from a very special children’s book author and illustrator. Emma Choi, Chadwick International Class of 2020 alumna, shared her journey of writing and publishing a children's picture book in a series of virtual presentations. Emma, who now attends Dartmouth College, wrote the book in part because she was motivated to express her ideas on human rights to a younger audience.

Grade 4 is currently studying historical fiction and discovered Emma’s book through the Chadwick library catalog. Emma created “Grampy’s Bedtime Story” for her personal project in 2017. She explained her process to students in great detail, including analyzing children's books to better understand the genre, techniques and story structure, and her dedication over eight months to writing, editing and illustrating the story.

Students were inspired by Emma’s presentation and her passion for writing. She encouraged students to think about the benefits of freedom of speech and to work through the challenges that they face when writing. “Don't be afraid to express what you truly believe,” she advised students. “Pursue your dreams.”
