On the week of February 23-27, Village School celebrated the rich language diversity of our VS Community by having International Home Language Week. This week is practiced in celebration of International Mother Language Day — a day established by UNESCO, celebrated on every February 21, highlighting the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity around the world.
Our faculty and staff dedicated time throughout the week to read books in various languages such as, Tagalog/Filipino, Chinese, Welsh, Korean, Romanian, Ukrainina/Russian, Portuguese, French, and Afrikaans to our VS students. They also shared background information on the language and selected stories, and led brief reading discussions with the class. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to be exposed to cultural and linguistic diversity in a fun way, and a chance to celebrate their home language at school.
